Calls Out Steve Knight for his Extreme Record on Women’s Health
Santa Clarita, Calif. – Today, Bryan Caforio, candidate in California’s 25th Congressional District, received the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
“NARAL is proud to endorse pro-choice leader Bryan Caforio in his campaign for Congress, and to stand with him as he fights to defend women’s reproductive freedom,” said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “California’s women and families deserve a leader who makes their wellbeing a priority, not an afterthought. But Bryan’s opponent has spent his time in Congress focused on banning abortion and defunding Planned Parenthood. Those aren’t the priorities of California families, who want their leaders focused on creating jobs and protecting access to basic healthcare, including abortion. Bryan listens to the needs of hardworking families and is dedicated to being their voice in Congress.”
Rep. Steve Knight, Caforio’s opponent, opposes a woman’s right to choose without exception, including in the case of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is endangered. He has also voted against requiring insurers to cover contraception and against allowing nurses to administer common forms of contraception. Further, he voted against protecting working women from being fired by their employers for using birth control, and even co-sponsored a bill allowing employers to fire single women who become pregnant.
“I’m honored to be endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America,” said Caforio. “No politician should get between a woman and her doctor, but unfortunately my opponent doesn’t agree. Congressman Knight’s anti-women record is wrong for this district. When I’m in Congress, I will always stand up for a woman’s right to choose.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America is dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans and works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
Caforio was born and raised in Southern California by two public school teachers, attended UCLA and Yale Law School, worked for a United States federal judge, and practices as an attorney taking on some of the world’s biggest banks. Bryan lives in Santa Clarita with his wife Lisa, who serves as a Deputy City Attorney at the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.
The 25th District covers northern Los Angeles County and part of Ventura County including the Antelope Valley, Palmdale, Lancaster, Santa Clarita, and Simi Valley. President Obama won the district in 2008, and experts consider this race a toss-up. Last year Democratic registration eclipsed Republican registration, and the district is now majority-minority. National Republicans list Congressman Knight as one of their most vulnerable incumbents.
